Biographical Statement
Dr Eve Hepburn is Depute Director of the Academy of Government and Programme Director of the Master of Public Policy (MPP) and Postgraduate Certificate in Practice in Government. Eve is also Senior Research Fellow in Politics. She is Principal Investigator on an ESRC-funded research project, Co-Editor of the Journal of Regional & Federal Studies, Associate Editor of Scottish Affairs, and Co-Convenor of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Standing Group on Federalism and Regionalism. Eve joined the Department in February 2007 as an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow. During 2008-10 she held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship and directed the MSc Multi-level and Regional Politics. Prior to this, she was a Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen. She has also held Visiting Fellowships at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), McGill University (Montreal), European University Institute (Florence), Università di Cagliari (Sardinia), University of Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown) and Großbritannien-Zentrum der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Research Interests
Eve has published over 25 journal articles, book chapters, special issues and books. Her research interests include: comparative European politics, territorial politics (regionalism, federalism and nationalism), political parties, multilevel governance, European integration, island politics, multi-level citizenship and immigration, and devolved policy-making. Eve has conducted research on the following cases: the UK (including Scotland, Northern Ireland, London), Italy (including Northern Italy, Sardinia, Tuscany), Spain (including Catalonia), Germany (including Bavaria, Berlin), Finland (including Aland), Canada (including Quebec, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island).
Eve currently holds grants from:
- the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on 'The Politics of Island Regions: A Framework for Comparative Research' (2010-12);
- the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) on 'Les parties et les electeurs au Quebec et en Ecosse: Une etude compare' (Parties and Voters in Quebec and Scotland: A Comparative Study) (2011-13) (joint holder);
- the Sardinian Government on 'Specialità e differenziazione in Sardegna. Uno studio interdisciplinare e comparato su istituzioni, identità e diritti' (Speciality and Differentiation in Sardinia: an interdisciplinary and comparative study on institutions, identity and rights) (2010-12) (joint holder);
- the Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence (JMC) and Europa Institute on 'The New European Agenda for Integration: Regions, Multi-level Governance and Immigrant Integration in the European Union' (2012).
Eve has previously held grants from:
- the Leverhulme Trust on the 'Regional Dynamics of Party Competition' (2008-10), which explored the structures and processes of (substate) regional party systems in Canada, Italy, Germany and the UK;
- the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on 'The Challenges and Opportunities for Substate Territories in Europe. A Comparative Analysis of Party Strategies for Autonomy, Power and Capacity' (2007-8).

Teaching and Public Engagement
Eve currently convenes the MSc course in 'Multi-level Democracy and Public Policy' (semester 2). She has also taught the postgraduate course 'Scottish Government and Politics', the undergraduate courses 'Introduction to Politics and International Relations' and 'Democracy in Comparative Perspective', and contributed seminars to 'Theory and Practice of Political Research'.
Eve serves on the Organising Committee of the Scottish Policy Innovation Forum (SPIF) in Edinburgh, and acts as referee for several political science journals and publishing houses and rapporteur for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). She is also a member of the Institute of Governance, the Europa Institute, and the Public Policy Network (PPN) at the University of Edinburgh. Eve has provided political commentary on regional party politics to the BBC, UK and international press. She has also undertaken research for the Scottish Funding Council on knowledge transfer into public policy, and provided electoral analysis for the BBC during Scottish elections.
