Campaign Briefings

paddy le mondeThere is considerable international interest in the Scottish parliament elections in May 2007 which promise to be the most exciting since the parliament was set up in 1999. Since the beginning of the campaign David McCrone and Paddy Bort have briefed a wide range of media organisations, including: BBC TV and radio, Polish Public Television, Hong Kong radio, the British Council, Ministere des Relations Internationales, Quebec, Canada, print journalists from the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles TimesLa Presse (Montreal), Le Point (France), Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil), Weekend Avisen (Denmark), Reformatisch Dagblad (Netherlands) and Reforma (Mexico), as well as a number of British newspapers and journals.

Our photograph shows Paddy Bort with Jean-Pierre Langellier of Le Monde.

Study of Social Mobility in Scotland

Cristina Iannelli and Lindsay Paterson

Extensive mobility between class of origin and class of destination has been a characteristic feature of societies in Europe and North America since the middle of the twentieth century. The last time this was investigated for Scotland, however, was in the 1970s. This research project analyses patterns of social mobility in Scotland and the role played by education and by educational reforms in the process of social mobility between generations.

About Events at the Institute of Governance

The Institute and its predecessor have successfully hosted conferences, seminars and study tours. We are expanding this work, especially by providing services to the business sector, and by offering briefings on Scottish politics, constitutional change, public policy and current affairs to a range of organisations.

Briefings and the establishment of expert panels are also planned for civil servants and parliamentary staff so that they can obtain direct access to policy-related expertise in the University and from other sources.

Read about some of our past events in the archive.
