Nations and Regions research programme: Programme Management

The research programme is co-ordinated through the Institute of Governance, which is the lead contractor. The Institute is co-directed by Professors Alice Brown and David McCrone.

Professor McCrone co-ordinates the programme on a day-to-day basis advised by an executive group drawn from representatives of the working teams, meeting at six-monthly intervals. The co-ordinator controls a small central budget, covering costs of meetings, stationery, dissemination and similar administrative expenses, and a modest sum for contingencies. Our programme has been carefully designed and integrated, but no-one can predict precisely how events or the research will develop as the debate over constitutional change progresses and we have built in a little flexibility. For example, should parliamentary debates at Westminster or Holyrood focus on national identity in terms of who is deemed to belong to the different political communities we have the technical means available, for a relatively small outlay, to analyse the discourse using technology and methodology developed at St. Andrews.

An advisory group comprising the research team, outside academic expertise, and members of the user communities, including key civil servants, and representatives of organisations from civil society are meeting yearly.
