The Policy and Governance Research Group examines politics and social policy in its applied settings, explores the different dimensions of public and social policy today, and is a leader in knowledge transfer with policy makers. The group brings together researchers with a diverse range of substantive interests explored across a range of geographical settings. We are interested in what government is and does, in public, social and foreign affairs and at national, local and international levels. This includes processes of policy formulation, decision making, welfare interventions, implementation and regulation involving the state, its sub-units, and non-state actors, forms and institutions. Our theoretical interests are directly related to our concern with practice and with new conceptions of what it means to govern.
The group originated in the Politics and International Relations and Social Policy subject areas in the School of Social and Political Science. We seek to bring together researchers in policy-making and governance issues who would like to discuss transferable intellectual frameworks in the policy sciences (e.g. instruments, institutions and networks) that could be applied in a range of areas, going beyond Social and Political Science to include Business, GeoSciences and Education. We work alongside similar groups in health, education and criminology in the University. In particular we want to provide a facility for PhD students in relevant topics from all parts of the University to supplement the other research groups in the subject areas where they are based.
The convener of the group is Richard Parry, Social Policy, and group activities will be posted on this site.
